Mayhewianism #2

"To really love literature is to love how it rewrites your subjectivity, how it kicks your ass with its transformative power." (Jonathan Mayhew)

I feel the same way about love in general. "Strike, witless bitch," said Irving Layton. "Blind me!"

At loss for words... That is, I am missing the "Thomas LIKES Thomas's link"-feature that Facebook would feature.... Great post... by Jonathan, that is...

I expanded a bit on it here.

Very nice. What do you think about healthcare? For some reason I trust your opinion because you are looking at the US from a distance.

Congratulations on healthcare! is basically my view. I have some strange, vaguely kooky views on modern medicine, but there is no doubt in my mind that if that's what you're going to have then you need a decent way of securing access for everyone. I haven't really looked into the details and it seems like more reform is necessary down the road (like a public option). Still, given what I think is true of the US healthcare system, Obama's success here is really very impressive.

I am kind of confused about the extreme left's response to the bill. A lot of people have said that capitalism is still ticking on and that it ignores the working class, etc. But I hope that this is a beginning. I usually like your views on the matter very much, and your attention to what seems reasonable to me. Anyway.

Well, health care continues to be a for-profit business. So it's true that healthcare hasn't put an end to capitalism. But there's no reason to think the democrats and Obama are interested in ending capitalism. Like I say, I haven't looked at the details of the reform, but it is my impression that the working class will benefit.

Who on the extreme left were you thinking of?
