Hmm, I expected something more along the lines of "intensity in our feeling for the world" ... but of course you were bound to surprise me with something for more interesting!

In the end poets have nothing to do with this world, they are up against historical forces.
In the end, historical forces have nothing to do with culture. They are up against poets.
Well, they're focused or channeled by poets into the culture (in so far as a culture is vibrant, healthy.) You can have a culture, like Homer's or, perhaps, Shakespeare's, in which poetry was very involved in the conversion of history into culture, or a culture like ours, in which it is almost entirely excluded from that process.
